Give your phrase an ending
You finish with: A two-bar melody with a deliberate pause.
Step 1: Find the notes
A bar has four beats here, so two bars is eight beats.
Listen for: the Piano Roll playing back the phrase you hummed.
Can’t find the notes?
Right-click FL Keys and choose Piano roll. First match one note to your hum; then decide whether the next note goes up, down or stays put. Play it, look away and hum it back. Snap to scale can help identify a starter note set, but leave it off when testing a note outside that set. It’s a guide, not an originality rule.
Step 2: Leave some air
Listen for: the one silent beat, and what it does to the notes around it.
Step 3: Compare two endings
Listen for: which of the two endings you want to hear again.
Fig. 3. Two bars, five pitches, one silent beat. The Ending switch changes only the last note, C or D.
Same phrase, one different last note. Which one do you want to hear again?
iPhone on silent? Flip the switch.
Now in FL Studio: save a version, change only the last note of your phrase, then hum both without playback.
Step 4: Save and check
The five-pitch limit is only a starter exercise.
Listen for: your two bars repeating the same way each time, pause included.
Finish
The check: Does your two-bar phrase repeat the same way each time, pause included? Then you’re done.
Words you know now: Piano Roll, beat, bar, pitch.
Or stop here. Your place is kept on this device.
