Revise by subtraction

Step 1: Make a safe comparison

1. Open FirstTrack.
2. Save a new version.
3. In the weakest section, remove four bars of repetition, or mute one part for four bars.
4. Keep the earlier version: don’t delete it.

Step 2: Compare complete passages

1. Play both versions from the preceding section through to the next entrance.
2. Keep the better version, even if that’s the original.

Listen for: whether the change makes the passage more purposeful.

Step 3: Save and check

1. Save FirstTrack.
2. Play or sing the main phrase once, without backing.
3. Check that the arrangement still supports the idea you meant to express.

Listen for: the main phrase on its own, then the arrangement still serving it.
